Another edition of the Architecture Matters conference will take place on May 15-16 in Munich, Germany, bringing together architects, city officials, developers, and other professionals who care about the built environment (you can read our report on edition 20223). In the current situation, a meeting is called “Problems vs. Problems”to reflect on how the pressing and interconnected challenges of housing, climate and environmental issues need to be addressed in order to achieve positive outcomes, and to prevent another disaster.
Hosted in the Conference Room, recently renovated by HENN, the conference begins with a thought-provoking speech by Linus Neumann, president and spokesperson of the Chaos Computer Club, on the state of Cybersecurity and Infrastructure. Among the speakers this year we find Odile Decq (Studio Odile Decq), Anupama Kundoo (Anupama Kundoo Architects), Kåre Stokholm Poulsgaard, (3XN – GXN), Elisabeth Merk (Architect of the City of Munich), among others , including a special report on the photographs of Beirut by Sergey Pomonarev, and how the current crisis is visible in the built environment.
This conference is organized by plan A, and moderated by Nadin Heinich. Full programme, details and tickets.
How can we distribute the costs of the green transition fairly? What new construction options are climate-friendly? Is replacing existing buildings enough to solve the housing crisis? What principles need to be simplified? …
In recent months there has been a dramatic change in the financial situation of the property market. Construction costs have risen, which has made affordable housing scarcer in urban areas. At the same time, climate change is forcing many cities to adopt strong environmental goals. Financial values and real estate values also change.
In the midst of this complex upheaval, how can we address social and environmental challenges as interconnected parts? Can solving one problem cause another?
With “Architecture Matters 2024 – Crisis vs. Crisis”, we aim to have an honest discussion about competing priorities and chart a course for effective solutions to shape the future of architecture. We combine big-picture thinking with critical thinking on key topics: financial markets, building standards, and critical thinking – fresh ideas from elsewhere.

“Now people have to learn to live with the loss of established truths.” Linus Neumann
Digitalization – a word often spoken as a solution, not only from the current crisis in the construction industry. Can 16 different federal building codes coexist with a streamlined digital design and permitting process? Furthermore, how vulnerable are our urban infrastructures in the face of hybrid warfare?
As an IT security consultant, Linus Neumann is enlisted by international companies and key infrastructure operators to disrupt their systems and eliminate security vulnerabilities. He has also investigated international espionage. In his role as a spokesperson for the Chaos Computer Club, Neumann regularly provides public opinion on the latest issues related to internet politics, IT security, and digitalization.
